ONE PIECE #607 - - Special Review

I get the feeling that there’s been a hiccup or two going on “under the
deck” lately for ONE PIECE. Not only is this episode a week late, it also recycles
a scene or two at the beginning. At
first, I was worried that I accidentally loaded the wrong video. Why, I even
double-checked to make sure I didn’t!
But I quickly realized that it wasn’t
my fault, it was the show’s, and I’ve got a theory about why…

You don’t have to be at all versed in the logistics of animation
production to sense that this ‘fierce battle’ between Luffy and Caesar is a
carrot that’s been dangled in front of the animators all season. Artists are
supposed to be able to draw everything, of course, but we all know that they enjoy
a big, super-powered fight the most. The rendering on this one episode gets
kicked up so many notches that it feels like watching a ten minute clip of a
bigger budget ONE PIECE feature.

While we’re on the subject of ‘ridiculous escalation,’ as it were, I’m
going to pull in another pop cultural talking point to articulate my
appreciation of this show. Now that I’ve gotten to see happy-go-lucky Luffy
swelling up with righteous indignation, I can’t help but think of KINGDOM
HEARTS. Please don’t take this pejoratively, of course, but I’ve never been
able to get over the ridiculous novelty of how those games give Disney’s funny
animal characters their best FINAL FANTASY action makeover. Obviously, the
approach worked, but it’s nevertheless amusing when you see Donald Duck doing all the badass posturing that’s typical to
J-RPG’s.

Luffy is likewise lionized here in a fashion that’s just as much of
tonal jump… but somehow, it just kind-of works. I guess if character wins you over with his silly antics, you're willing to follow him in whatever he does?

Caesar!” here and decide for yourself, then read my comments
about the previous episode here.
