What Does an American TV Writer Think of Anime?

Nobody's mind should be blown mind by this fact; but there is a whole ocean of difference between anime and the kind of programming you'll find on American television. While we here at Anime Vice have been sitting solidly in one particular section of the world's greater pop culture sphere, we're ever curious about getting views on our favorite shows 'from the outside looking in.'

Thus, we've reached out to rising star Andrew Burrows-Trotman, a (North) American TV writer, for some expert perspective on two of the biggest titles this year. Just what would a man versed in network primetime and cable premium content think of this nutso Japanation stuff, anyway? Well, read on...

ANIME
VICE
: Getting
straight to the point - - in your humble, professional opinion, which was the
better show? ATTACK ON TITAN or GARGANTIA ON THE VERDUROUS PLANET?

ANDREW BURROWS-TROTMAN: I enjoyed both series for different reasons.

AV: OK. Play it
diplomatic, for now. Let’s take a couple steps
back and come back to that later. I
nterviewees give better introductions than interviewers, so… just who are you?

ABT: Well, my name is Andrew Burrows-Trotman. I am a
proud Canadian boy that hates cold weather.

I was born in Scarborough Ontario
and raised in a single parent immigrant home by my strict, over-protective
Guyanese mother who kept me indoors to protect me from the rough neighborhood I
grew up in. I spent most of my time watching TV and reading books for lack of
anything better to do (my mother refused
to buy me video games
).

I was obsessed with 80's television and, to this day, I can tell
you the time, day and network for almost any show that aired for more than a
season during that great decade of TV.

== TEASER ==

AV: Yikes. 'Otaku expertise' of a different stripe! Were your friends as into this stuff as you?

ABT: I can safely say I was the only kid in
my projects that dreamed of running a TV network.

Still, I actually began writing mainly to
make friends in school. By conveniently including select classmates in my
creative writing assignments, I made many friends!

AV: Now, about
your work in TV... what do you?

ABT: I write for both film and television, actually, but if I had
to choose between them it would definitely be TV. I love to write in the genres of
fantasy, science fiction and historical fiction and currently have two of my
own original TV pilots in development at different production companies.

AV: And what are these
pilots about?

ABT: Both pilots are drastically different. One is a
period piece set in 19’th century New Orleans that follows the lives of an
ensemble of characters living and working in the legal red-light district known
at the time as "Storyville".

My other pilot, entitled "The
Creation," is a dark genre script about a modern day, Cronenberg-esque
Frankenstein set in the world of regenerative medicine and top secret military
experimentation.

And I am currently writing yet another original, set in the
world of ancient Israel, that follows the lives of various women in the fabled harem of King Solomon.

AV: So were these shows actually your first encounter with
anime? Please tell us they weren't.

ABT: Nah. My first experience with anime I understood as anime started with
classics like AKIRA and GHOST IN THE SHELL. However, my formative experiences with
anime were shows that were 'anime' by a looser definition.

Like everyone else I loved
the 80's TRANSFORMERS show. I can't stress to you how profoundly this show
impacted me. Transformers was never on a Canadian network like other American
cartoons and not being able to afford those classic brown box converters, I had
to twist and bend my black and white TV antennas to get a 'snowy' Buffalo feed, but I still watched every episode even though I could barely make
out the images!

My absolute favorite anime, though... was G-FORCE!

AV: Interesting. So it was
G-FORCE and not BATTLE OF THE PLANETS…?

ABT: Right. We got the original show in Canada, not the 'remake.' I had never seen anything quite like it! I mean, what American cartoon in the 80's would dare have a bad guy wear lip stick and
still be as badass as Zoltar!

I also was a huge fan of DUNGEONS
& DRAGONS
, which I only realized years later was co-produced with a Japanese
studio (which probably explains why it was so much better than the rest of the Saturday morning line-up).

AV: So not a total neophyte then. Very good. Now, back to the present - - what’s your take on TITAN?

ABT: I thought it was eerie and disturbing -
- and superior to GARGANTIA in terms of visual
delivery
- - but after a while, I tired of the story arc. It is a gut-wrenching
series that makes you empathize with Eren Jaeger. I mean, who wouldn't feel for
a young man having to watch his mother eaten by a giant human?

Still, after setting up the story, I
grew restless with the gory Titan killings. Where is the series headed? How far
can we go, just watching Eren's bottomless hatred for the Titans expressed in
brilliantly-violent battles?

AV: What did you think of the big twist, though?

ABT: Eren's mysterious powers to become a
Titan were an interesting mid-series revelation, but it did nothing to move the
story forward emotionally. I found myself growing more and more curious about
these strange Titans and tiring of the human struggle to
fend them off. I wanted to know the origins and back story of these monsters.

More to the point - - I wanted to know
what I was to take away from this fascinating and frustrating story about
humanity?

AV: And what about
GARGANTIA, then?

ABT: I feel that TITAN
failed to deliver on its great promise and, in the end, GARGANTIA is the
superior show.

GARGANTIA had a complete arc for our
protagonist and great chemistry between Ledo and Chamber. Amy's pet squirrel is
a little bizarre, but I became emotionally involved in Ledo's journey and
wanted to see it through. GARGANTIA had more to say about the interconnected
nature of life than TITAN did. Ledo learns valuable lessons about taking a good
vs evil stance and just how dangerous it is to be willing to die for a 'cause.'

Also, I hope I am not spoiling anything for any readers but...

I was truly bummed when Chamber died!

AV: That was sad, indeed. Now, we're most curious about how these shows compare to what's in your world. Do they pull off, or get away, with
things that would never work on American TV?

ABT: It would depend on whether the shows were being developed as
live-action projects, and if they were for cable or broadcast television.

AV: Put this way - - are there certain things that wouldn't pass a network show's writing room?

GARGANTIA’s tone is ready made for broadcast TV, and there would be very few
adjustments needed (other than losing
squirrels as pets
).

For TITAN, it would
definitely be the graphic nature of the Titans attacks. That would have to be
lost so children (and adults) can sleep at night! The attacks can be staged
more implicitly, since everyone knows the Titans are popping the humans in their
mouths like Pillsbury pastries! I also sense an undercurrent of nihilism that
wouldn't sit well with studio execs, so I would write in some more moments of
levity between the soldiers and beef up Eren Jaeger's love life to make it more
palatable.

AV: It is a bleak show, no doubt about it. So where can
people find you online if they want to see what's next for ABT? Are you on the Twitter
or anything?

ABT: I am one of those
stubborn curmudgeons, trying to stem the tide of progress, who has come to the
horrible realization that I must get with the times and get a Twitter account
going. Seeing as I have lots of new projects to promote, I will probably do it
soon, but the just the thought of hashtags and re-tweets is already making me
nauseous. Ugggh!

AV: Thanks for talking to
us today, ABT!

ABT: Thank you for having me! Pet squirrels and rampant decapitations aside, it was fun 'marathoning' both of these
compelling (and seriously unusual) shows. I really want to watch more new anime, now, so if any of you have some suggestions, please hit me with 'em! I'm game for anything.

AV MOD MATERIAL: NARUTO Ch. 640 Review

Pull yourself together, man! You're freakin' me the heck out.
Pull yourself together, man! You're freakin' me the heck out.

Things have taken a dark turn as Obito manages to pull himself together and take full grasp of a power not seen since the legendarySage of Six Paths.

The Good

Jinchuriki Warehouse. You're going to like the way you look.
Jinchuriki Warehouse. You're going to like the way you look.

I was getting some serious chills going through this chapter. It was all pretty mundane shonen action up until the point Obito was being ripped apart. The visuals of it was something straight out of HELLRAISER -- which is among the list of films I was too young to have been watching. I applaud Kishimoto for really going for the gore in this scene. It's not something he's touched on very often. Which I think only serves to increase the impact of such a jarring image. I bet he had a hard time selling his editor on that one.

The Bad

They don't need to see you to know you're there, Obito.
They don't need to see you to know you're there, Obito.

The only problem I have with these events is that Obito pulled himself together far too effortlessly in the face of what's designed as an uncontrollable force. It's fine that he manages to control himself, but he suddenly has a mastery of these new abilities that just clicks. This is the same power that the Sage of Six Paths struggled to contain, and I'm expected to believe Obito can harness it becasue of his unhealthy fixation with a girl?

Kishimoto has been hammering the point home of Obito's obsession for Rin. So much so that I'm getting a tad sick of it. I almost wish someone would pull the Edo Tensei on Rin just so she could tell him to get a life.

Verdict 5/5

What could have been a cliche chapter about a villain reaching his "ultimate form" -- I hope --, was turned on its head by the creator making a bold choice with his visuals. It's nice getting this level of shock after the arc has been dragging out this long. Ultimately, this is a chapter with some really incredible art. It's something that I look forward to seeing animated.

I can't help but comment on the irony of the "Finally" chapter title this week. I'll be thinking the same thing when this arc ends. Having your villain reach this point gives us hope that a conclusion isn't far off. How could things possibly get worse? *knock on wood*

Rules

  • You can caption any or all of the images!
  • You can caption the same image more than once, but not in the same post!

To do this, highlight some of the text below the images (try starting from "want to recommend") all the way up to some of the text above the images (try highlighting up to "fill in the captions!") and then right-click on that text and select "copy", go to the comment box, right-click inside that and select "paste" - then all you need to do is fill in the captions! Hope that helps, have fun!

AV MOD MATERIAL: BLEACH Ch. 546 Review

Nine days in manga time could end of taking four years.
Nine days in manga time could end of taking four years.

" This is going to be my only chance for some time off before we go in the last battle, so I've been given a bit more time than usual.

In order to put everything I have into this, I'm going to get some good rest before it begins.

When we restart, we'll jump right into the final saga of the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc. Please look forward to it! "

Message from Tite Kubo

Shunsui delivers a message to Ichigo's friends that the Soul Society may not be able to let him return home, but they may have less time than they originally thought. A lot less.

The Good

Would Yamamoto have come to see everyone personally?
Would Yamamoto have come to see everyone personally?

I bet there were a lot of people who questioned the idea of Shunsui taking over command of the Gotei 13, but it's actually been shown to have been a remarkably appropriate choice. I really like his management style. He shows in this chapter that just becasue you're in the position of having to make the hard decisions does mean you have to be a dick about it. He comes to see Ichigo's friends and family personally, patiently lets them vent their anger, and politely offers them a chance to see Ichigo later. Don't underestimate the little touches in a leader.

You're going to have to forgive me for drifting on a bit of tangent here, but has anyone else ever wondered if Tatsuki is in love with Ichigo? Kubo's use of Tatsuki has been one of my biggest disappointments of the series. I loved the feint he used when it was Orihime who gained powers, but then what was the point of all the other moments that followed throughout the series? With no mention from her about Orihime, she looks sadder than anyone when it comes to Ichigo. I hope Kubo has a plan to sum this up in the end.

The Bad

This certainly wasn't the most thrilling chapter of the arc, but it has some little touches that I appreciated in this issue. -- You're also almost always going to make me happy when I see Tatsuki. However, there are still more chapters to follow of Ichigo's training. We got hints of what's to come last week, but this means we're back to the shonen cliche of the hero barreling to the rescue at the very last minute straight from training. BLEACH and NARUTO are littered with those scenes.

Verdict 4/5

I wouldn't count on that, Shunsui.
I wouldn't count on that, Shunsui.

Something that I really liked about this chapter is how its finale catches you off guard. It leads you along thinking there was plenty of more time to relax before things get serious, then it smacks you across the face with Yhwach waging a full scale invasion. For as extended as this arc has become, bravo on Kubo for just jumping in with both feet on this one. It's quite the cliffhanger to leave us clinging upon these next few weeks.

BLEACH will going on break until September 9th. I have to wonder if this date was selected on purpose to fall in line with the theme of nines in the Kaiser Gesang (King's Hymn) that's quoted at the end of the chapter. This should give some of you time to catch up before the end.

AV MOD MATERIAL: ONE PIECE Ch. 715 Review

I'm betting it'll be one of these three.
I'm betting it'll be one of these three.

If you thought Luffy had this tournament already won, you might be surprised by the level of opponents that have him surrounded this week.

The Good

Luffy's really being pressed into a corner
Luffy's really being pressed into a corner

I was really starting to feel Tom's pain this week with trying to draw a comparison for this chapter. You have the crew in dire straits, then Luffy's having this Royal Rumble inspired adventure to keep his brother's devil fruit out of the wrong hands. Both are equally entertaining stories that we keep switching between. It's like channel surfing through two of your favorite shows that are airing at the same time, and without the advantage of DVR. Every few weeks we get a little taste of the other. It certainly makes for an interesting balancing act.

This entire tournament would come across a bland shonen cliche if it wasn't for the characters. Ultimately, that's what saves this chapter.Ideo has a punch that literally explodes, Bobby and Kelly Funk were making me laugh, and Jean Ango is a sniper that 'throws' swords. How are you not be entertained by that? Isn't this level of craziness why you are here? -- I can't believe it's taken me this far into the arc to start making GLADIATOR references.

The Bad

The biggest critique I have with this chapter is that it falls into the same formula of the previous preliminary bout. Let's show off all these crazy abilities before getting the real fight started. However, be sure to remember that Oda surprised us last time. I would have put money down on Bellamy winning that match, and history has shown that I'd lose that wager.

Verdict 3/5

This tournament has been far more entertaining than I could've predicted, but I couldn't hold it against a reader if it isn't to your liking. I personally adored Thriller Bark, but it's highly likely there were some who didn't care so much for that adventure. It all just comes down to a matter of personal taste. I'm enjoying both of the Dressrosa plots. It's the pacing that's holding this back.

All the repeated breaks ONE PIECE has been having is the biggest downfall of Oda's plot experiment of telling two simultaneous stories. However, it's not as if he asked to get sick. With over ten years of dedicated service, the man deserves all the rest he needs.

Speaking of breaks. there's going to be yet another one week break for ONE PIECE. Also, stay tuned for this week's BLEACH review for a big announcement.

SILVER SPOON #1 - - Special Review

SHOGUN’S NOTE: The summer season is in swing, at last! I’ll be doing my best to watch most, if not all, of the new simulcasting pilots. As such, regular shows like ATTACK ON TITAN, ONE PIECE and, of course, DBZ will be getting a brief break in coverage to make room. Stay tuned, and don’t panic - - their eventual catch-ups will be spectacular!

I feel like a good 5-10 minutes of set-up have been strangely omitted from
this pilot. Between the title and the lead’s hilarious ineptitude for farm
work, I’d assume this show had the very 80’s sitcom premise of a privileged
kid being brusquely forced into doing real work (y’know, the kind that
gives you calluses and such).
However, despite a latter aside about silver
spoons’ linguistic roots in folk lore, that scenario is never actually
clarified.

== TEASER ==

Is this another case of some intentionally obtuse anime going out of their to cut out relevant information in the name of being ‘challenging?’ Nah,
probably not. Well, I hope not anyway. The show’s already falling victim to a
lot of bad anime tropes like the chibi histrionics our lead kicks up when he
meets the girl in the forest, and the unrealistic hysterics he has after
learning that eggs come out of hen’s butts.

(Seriously, there are plenty of grosser details of avian anatomy
that they could’ve goofed on, and they would’ve made for much funnier jokes.
Refer to “Scientifically Accurate DUCK TALES” and experience true disgust
).

I hate to shrug off the show, because most of the kids’ 4H hijinks
really made me smile, but I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t a stumbling first
step for a series. All of these shenanigans would’ve been that much more
entertaining - - and that much more meaningful character-wise, no less -
- if the show had bothered to actually set things up with a proper intro. As
is, it’s just a bit messy… and I’ll stop before I make any analogies likening
that mess to the kind you’d fine in a cow stable.

Watch this episode, "Welcome to Ezonoo” here and decide for yourself.

Ranma - - Character Spotlight - - AV MOD MATERIAL

HalberdierV2 and Takashichea explore notable anime and manga characters from the 90's & 2000's. Since Taka has never seen Ranma 1/2, Hal and Taka invited SamJaz to take Taka's place as an expert for this character spotlight segment.

SamJaz

Thanks Hal and Taka for inviting me! It was around 2008 when I started watching Anime. I was, what, sixteen? Maybe seventeen, I don’t know. I’d just read my first manga series, Rurouni Kenshin, and was looking around for more. I’d heard some good things about Ranma 1/2, so I thought I’d watch it. I was too new to know about the Dubbed/Subbed war, so I opted for the English Version.

And boy, was it funny.

I was too inexperienced to recognize the over-repeated tropes that every mangaka who ever read Love Hina or Dragonball Z or even this show, have since decided to be mandatory and inherently funny, regardless of delivery. For me, Ranma 1/2 laid the foundations, and the expectations, for the rest of my anime experiences.

It wasn’t until I read the manga, later on, that I noticed its flaws. I didn’t notice the filler because everything was so entertaining. I didn’t notice how back-and-forth everyone’s character development was because, honestly, I enjoyed watching everyone freak out and overreact to what, by experience, any rational person might have worked out was a misunderstanding, or Happosai up to his old tricks.

But, even with all that, Ranma 1/2 is still one of the most entertaining shows I’ve ever experienced. The laws of reality here are slightly tighter than in, say, Looney Toons, but the fact that we can have an episode where a guy tries explaining to his unwilling fiance that her new pet pig is actually a teenage boy whose sole aim in life is to ruin said guy’s life- While the school jock gallantly battles said guy to force him to free the love of his life from slavery- and actually care about these characters while laughing into our fists because we don’t want to wake up the rest of the family at Three in the morning, shows to me at least that this is one of the better shows to come out of Anime.

Oh, and the love of his life is the same guy he’s fighting. This guy turns into a girl when splashed with cold water. I probably should have pointed that out first.

HalberdierV2

Whoa, where can I start with this show? I only learned of it back in 2010 when my brother introduced me to it. Since he was a big Inuyasha fan at the time, he found out that Ranma 1/2 was written by the same mangaka, Rumiko Takahashi. This show has been a sleeper hit to me, and I never thought something like this would so enthrall me. It's pretty much half romance, half martial arts, and a splash of genderbending shenanigans by the main character. The show mainly focuses on Ranma and his love-hate relationship with Akane, his forcibly-chosen fiancée, while having to fight off advances from other women, rivals, all while dealing with the tiny problem of Him becoming a Her when splashed by cold water. Not to mention, dealing with another set of male suitors while being a girl. This show takes the cake for the anime to make me laugh the most, and with over 150 episodes, its easy to see why.

Ranma and Akane showing off their feelings for each other.
Ranma and Akane showing off their feelings for each other.

Just like SamJaz says, Ranma 1/2's strength remains in its ability to constantly entertain us with great characters each with their own distinctive quirks and personalities. The plot's light-hearted nature even allows for many of Ranma's sworn enemies to act like friends every once in a while, even join forces with him, but still be a threat to Ranma's relationship, or even his life. Also, it is one of the few Animes to tackle genderbending from the humorous angle, much to the show's benefit.

Ranma 1/2 does suffer a bit in the later seasons with maintaining a consistent storyline, particularly in the later seasons where the story part of the show doesn't hold up as much, but still manages to keep the action and humor going. Also it has great voice acting both in Japanese and English (a rarity in the 90s as well) which do a good job of engaging the viewers.

If you haven't seen it, give it a try. The Manga and Anime have different stories, so you can choose whichever you want. if you choose to watch the anime, either language is fine, and even though I originally watched it in Japanese, I'd recommend going for the English version.

Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did!

Takashichea

Sounds like Hal and SamJaz had an awesome time with Ranma 1/2. It's my first time watching Ranma 1/2. I watched a few episodes and somehow lost my place. When I grew up, I used to watch Inuyasha on Adult Swim when I was in middle school. I recognized Rumiko Takahashi's art style right away. I was blown away by how many nudity shots were in the first few episodes. Though, it was mostly Ranma who did the blowing away. I don't know whether to say I was lucky or freaked out due to the gender bender element. Like Hal and SamJaz pointed out, Ranma's gender changes based on the temperature of water he gets exposed to. Ranma is my first gender bender show, and it's a blast to watch. The show revolves around Ranma's relationship with Akane. The two often fight each other. Ranma would called Akane a tomboy, while Akane has a violent temper. Ranma has no tact when it comes to women, but he loves Akane deep inside. He cannot admit his feelings, and it's the same for Akane. She gets along with Ranma's female version better than the male version. I'll admit both genders of Ranma are beautiful. Ranma is a likeable character. I can see how he and the rest of cast can make this show fun and endless for everyone. Despite that I watched only a few episodes, Ranma does change a bit, but he remains the same old guy throughout the series.

Ranma 1/2 is a great way to start on anime if you're new to anime.

WATAMOTE #1 - - Special Review

SHOGUN’S NOTE: The summer season is in swing, at last! I’ll be doing my best to watch most, if not all, of the new simulcasting pilots. As such, regular shows like ATTACK ON TITAN, ONE PIECE and, of course, DBZ will be getting a brief break in coverage to make room. Stay tuned, and don’t panic - - their eventual catch-ups will be spectacular!

Ah-hem… a dating sim where the guy gets off on a backrub? Now, that’s confusing
male and female fantasies rather seriously.

That’s the kind of the point though, isn’t it? One of the (many,
many
) funny things about teenage angst is that the self-absorbed nature of it
all. Otherwise intelligent young people falling into pitfalls of self-loathing
and self-defeat that just a bit of self-awareness would help them avoid. I don’t
know if WATAMOTE (I’m not typing out its overlong ‘proper’ title) is a
brilliant show, but it is a deftly observed profile of this very specific part
of the human experience. Why, it’s on point enough that I was nodding most of
the time; recognizing how this girl’s various, needlessly-neurotic shenanigans
echoed my own experiences as an angsty teen.

== TEASER ==

No, I never had quite the enormous discrepancy between interior and
exterior worlds the way this girl does, but I may have drawn a mental ‘social-interaction
escape plan’ or two that were just like the one she devises at the McDonald’s.
And I’ve also been on the other end of the arrangement (like her brother is
during the one scene in his bedroom
). You’ll never truly understand that saying
about how “Hell is other people” until you’ve been forced to hang out with a
Debbie Downer relative, oh no…

I guess I’m coming back to my usual… difficulty with
slice-of-life shows as I appraise this. Maybe the show’s a little too quirky to be
properly described as a slice-of-life but, nevertheless, the pilot ends without
a cliffhanger or much of a compelling reason to come back next week. The girl successfully escaped the McD’s - - what’s
left to resolve?
Even if they cut off the episode a few minutes earlier and
left her in a bind where she still needed to get out without the ‘threat’ of
talking to anybody, that’d be a more compelling reason to keep watching.

As is, it’s just a pleasantly self-contained short about a girl who needs
to get over her own social unpleasantness.

Watch this
episode,
"Since
I'm Not Popular, I'll Change My Image a Bit” here and decide for yourself.

Comic Con 2013: Come See Us There!

San Diego Comic Con 2013 is upon us! I’ll be at the convention, every
single day, and if any of you lunatics are going to be there, too, I’d love to
meet you in the flesh! If you see me on the convention floor, don’t hesitate to
say “Yo!” and throw a hand up for me to high five.

Or, if you’d like to go
about this a little more efficiently, you can drop by any of my signings…

In addition to the copies
of HYBRID BASTARDS! I’ll be signing

I’ll also be putting my signature on oodles of goodies for MAX

at the VIZ Media booth (#2819). Yep, you read that right. As I mentioned
on a recent episode of THE VICE PIT, I’m writing the official comics version of
the new Disney XD toon for VIZ Kids. The book isn’t coming out until early 2014

While I’m at Boom/Archaia’s
booth, I’ll also be joining my creative comrades, Chris Northrop and Jeff
Stokely, for some signings of their new graphic novel THE REASON FOR DRAGONS (as I contributed a most medieval back-up
story to the book
). I’ve also got at
least one signing with funnyman Dan Fogler, since I’m working on spooky short
for the next installment of his whacked-out comedy hororr anthology, MOON LAKE.

Hit me up on at my Twitter handle - - @tompinchuk - - if you're there. The signings are as follows...

Anybody wondering, “Hey, where’s
Sam in all of this?
” can breath easy. The dude’s going to be at the con for
most of its duration, and if you ever find me on the floor, you can be sure Sam isn't be too far away. We’re actually going to be taping some special VICE PIT episodes while we’re at the
con, so stay tuned!

Also, don’t worry about content
on the site. Sam and I both burned the night oils this past weekend, working
ahead enough to make sure that the AV stream goes uninterrupted.
